PRESENTATION: Participants will review the ASAM definition of addiction, and basic information about both common and lesser known drugs of abuse. Trends in substances used, along with corresponding signs and symptoms of use, acute intoxication, and withdrawal will be discussed. This presentation will also pay special attention to the opiate epidemic, with focus on common interventions, national response, and the “swiss cheese” model for recovery. Participants will be able to achieve the following objectives:
- Provide at least one example of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual impacts of addiction.
- Identify at least three commonly used substances, and at least one symptom of intoxication and withdrawal for each substance.
- Identify at least three lesser known substances, and at least one symptom of intoxication and withdrawal for each substance.
- Describe at least two interventions used to treat opiate use disorders.
PRESENTER: Anna Byberg, LMSW, CAADC, has worked at Dawn Farm – a non-profit program that provides treatment and recovery support for individuals and families with substance use disorders – in a variety of roles since 2005, including Detox Counselor, Outpatient Therapist, and Project Manager. She is currently the Program Coordinator of the Dawn Farm Spera Recovery Center. Anna regularly presents on topics related to addiction and recovery, including addiction 101, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) for addiction professionals, the opiate epidemic, an informational program for families, and tobacco recovery. Anna has a BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan, and an MSW from Eastern Michigan University. She is a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC), an IC&RC reciprocal, with the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP).
