PRESENTATION: This training is designed for beginner and intermediate clinicians seeking to improve their treatment skills and improve their client’s outcomes. During this training, participants will learn techniques for identification and treatment using theoretical models and direct skills. Special emphasis will be placed on the application of refusal skills, and how to work on both addiction and mood disorder symptoms at the same time.

Participants will:

  • Learn basic and advanced relapse prevention techniques.
  • Learn similarities and differences in addiction and mood disorder symptoms.
  • Explain proper treatment for individuals with co-occurring mental health issues.
  • Share their own experiences with co-occurring disorders.
  • Practice the proper use of refusal skills training for their clients.
  • Learn what not to do when working with their clients.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Joseph has 28 years of experience working with mental health and addiction issues. He specializes in helping people with anxiety issues, recovery from addictions, and eating disorders. He has been the Director of Outpatient Programs at Connecticut Renaissance in Bridgeport, CT for the last four years, and was the Director of the Renfrew Center of Southern Connecticut for five years specializing in treating clients with eating disorders. He is on the faculty of the New England Institute of Addiction Studies for 12 years teaching the Neurobiology of Addictions, early recovery issues and the history of addiction treatment. With clinical and administrative skills and in his work as a professional educator he has unique qualifications to assist both clinicians and clients. He is also in private practice in Fairfield County, CT.
