UPDATE ON JOINT TASK FORCE WORK
We just found out that the public hearing for the Joint Task Force on the Heroin and Opioid Epidemic has been moved up to January 4th (it was previously scheduled for the 5th). The hearing will be held at 9:00 in rooms 210-211 in the Legislative Office Building in Concord. We know some of you were planning to testify so we wanted to inform you of the new date. Please contact Kate Frey or Michele Merritt if there are any questions.
As we updated you a few weeks back, the Legislature met during a special session and established a joint Substance Abuse Task Force. The Task Force met over a course of three weeks in December to debate a specific set of issues including:
Updating penalties for fentanyl distribution to be consistent with penalties for heroin
Requiring insurance companies to adhere to same substance abuse treatment evaluation criteria; removing prior authorization requirements
Updating prescription drug monitoring program technology, increase statewide usage
Expanding Drug Courts
Increasing law enforcement prevention and interdiction measures
Increasing prescriber educational standards
A final report has been released and outlines the issues discussed and designates those issues into three timeframes for action in the 2016 legislative session. Issues to be addressed in an ‘expedited’ manner had broad support and will be drafted into legislation and addressed in a joint public hearing.
