Melissa Fernald did a presentation on Substances of Abuse: Current Trends & Progression of Addiction on
Monday, Nov. 2nd, 2015, to a full class here at NHADACA in Concord. Melissa’s presentation centers around the common drug and alcohol trends with youth today, describe how they are using those substances and explore common use indicators for each trend presented. The progression of addiction will also be explored and discussed. Following this presentation, participants will be able to not only identify each stage of use, but be able to identify where a teen may fall within the progression. As a result attendees will be in a better position to direct parents on how to intervene based on where their teens fall in the progression. In applying this information through communicating concerns and intervening with teens concerned persons may need to learn how to effectively communicate. Participants will engage in an interactive discussion on strategies for communicating about concerns of alcohol and drug use. They will learn a strategy on how to have a “S.A.F.E” dialogue with parents, teens, schools and law enforcement. Through role plays and materials, participants will be able to share this technique with other adults.
