PRESENTATION: Humans spend a third of our lives sleeping. It is a necessary element of health and well-being, yet it is highly undervalued in our modern American culture. This presentation will explore the neurobiology of sleep, why it is imperative to our health, how it is impacted by sleeping medication and substance use and its role in mental illness. Participants will be able to explain what sleep architecture means to clients and will be able to educate them about sleep hygiene and steps that can be taken to improve sleep quality. Participants will also be able to understand the impact of hypnotic drugs and other substances on sleep quality.

PRESENTER:Kate Doucet is a second year, master’s level graduate student in Plymouth State University’s, Clinical Mental Health Counseling department and is currently serving as President-Elect of Plymouth’s Chi Sigma Iota chapter. Before perusing graduate studies, Kate has eight years of experience providing reproductive healthcare and education in a variety of clinical settings. Kate is interested in promoting prevention and wellness in the communities she serves and hopes to continue this work after graduation, as a mental health counselor.
