PRESENTATION:  This 3-hour training will examine general military culture, distinguish between the various branches and components of the military, including the role and mission of the NH National Guard and Reserve Force, as well as understand the differences between types and frequency of deployments. Participants will: increase understanding of the military and veteran population and culture; gain an increased understanding of the strengths, values, and unique qualities that veterans, military families, and service members possess; be able to list at least 2 specific challenges this population encounters while serving, upon returning from deployment; and after discharge; name at least one strategy that may assist providers that are treating this population.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:   Amy Cook is the Administrator for the New Hampshire Bureau of Community Based Military Programs at the Department of Health & Human Services where she is responsible for coordinating statewide strategies for government agencies, federal partners and local service providers to benefit NH service members, veterans and their families.  Amy spent the majority of her 20+ year professional career in the fields of Developmental Services and workforce development, gaining unparalleled experience in person-centered planning, Medicaid Home & Community-Based Services Waiver Programs, self-directed services, and pre-employment transition services while also establishing herself as a respected program innovator and big-picture thinker. Professionally trained to facilitate groups and processes, she now enjoys using her talents and skills to create an environment of cooperation & collaboration in which innovation and effective braiding of resources can take place in New Hampshire in order to enhance the lives of those who have served. 

Susan Brown LCMHC, MLADC, EMT-I (Ret) has worked in the behavioral health field for close to 30 years and has worked in a variety of settings.  She brings a unique skill set, passion, and understanding to this presentation. She was the Director of Psychological Health for the NH National Guard for 6 years and acted as the Statewide Military Liaison to the Community Mental Health Centers for 2 years. She is currently a behavioral health and substance use clinician at Veteran & First Responder Healthcare in Manchester, NH.  She is honored to be working in a setting where she has the privilege of treating currently serving military members, veterans, and first responders.

Major Mark B. Patterson is a veteran who has served in both the US Navy and the NH Army National Guard with 23 years of combined federal service. He has served on multiple overseas and combat deployments, and has participated in nearly a dozen State Active Duty Missions, including the response to Hurricane Katrina.  He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Southern NH University and is a graduate of the US Army's Command & General Staff College. Amongst his awards and decorations are the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, The Army Commendation Medal for Valor, the Combat Infantrymen's Badge and the Parachutist Badge. He is currently assigned to the Joint Force Headquarters of the NH Army National Guard as the Director of Service Member and Family Support, where he is responsible for implementing policies and action to support the Individual and Family Readiness of Service Members by building enduring partnerships within the community, providing direct program support, and facilitating referral services as required.
