New and Effective Ways of Working with Adolescents

with Substance Misuse Problems

The NH Training Institute of Addictive Disorders and The Seven Challenges LLC, invites you to register for the New and Effective Ways of Working with Adolescents with Substance Misuse Problems 18-hour (3 day) training July 24-26, 2019. Registration begins at 8:30 am and the training will run from 9:00 am-5:00 pm (start time may change).

This innovative training, helps the leadership team in an organization develop an understanding of The Seven Challenges program so they are prepared to support their team's training and counseling process. The Seven Challenges, LLC offers assistance with strategies for educating the community and referral sources about The Seven Challenges. This helps to create an environment of understanding In which youth are supported through their counseling and treatment process. An on-site, 3-day Initial training for the counselors who will be using the program, as well as the clinical supervisors is provided. The organization is also encouraged to have employees such as youth care workers, assistant group facilitators, or caseworkers who will be working with youth, attend the Initial Training. This training prepares counselors to immediately begin providing The Seven Challenges Program. As a result of attending this 18-hour training event, particiants will:

• Be introduced to The Seven Challenges curriculum and supervision, including the introduction of the Counselor Rating and Review form.  The prospective Seven Challenges Leader(s) will have introduction to Seven Challenges quality assurance documents with instructions for starting.  (More Supervisory and QA training is given at The Seven Challenges Leader Training.)
• Understand how to implement The Seven Challenges Program in their own unique counseling setting.
• Learn the Seven Challenges process, including the significance of each challenge and how to use the Challenges as part of a decision-making and implementation model.
• Understand how to set appropriate goals in adolescent drug treatment, based on knowledge of adolescent development and the stages of change.

The Seven Challenges:

• We decided to open up and talk honestly about ourselves and about alcohol and other drugs.
• We looked at what we liked about alcohol and other drugs, and why we were using them.
• We looked at our use of alcohol and other drugs to see if it has caused harm or could cause harm.
• We looked at our responsibility and the responsibility of others for our problems.
• We thought about where we seemed to be headed, where we wanted to go, and what we wanted to accomplish.
• We made thoughtful decisions about our lives and about our use of alcohol and other drugs.
• We followed through on our decisions about our lives and drug use. If we saw problems, we went back to earlier challenges and mastered them.

FACILITATOR

Richard L. Barr, LMHC, is the Senior Program Specialist for The Seven Challenges^®, LLC.  He works closely with organizations to provide training, clinical support, and oversight of Seven Challenges implementations.  Richard has worked extensively in the fields of education and counseling and prior to joining The Seven Challenges he was the clinical director for several juvenile justice programs.  Richard is also in private practice and serves as a part-time psychology instructor at Trinity International University.
