PRESENTATION:  The purpose of this training is to define addiction in different terms using the SAMHSA definition, life experience and the hijacked brain. It will also define stigma and discrimination with interactive activities and visual examples with storytelling interweaved in the training. Recovery friendly (RF) language is briefly introduced throughout; the action step is for participants to use this RF language to change the way we think, feel and act when speaking about addiction thus reducing the stigma and discrimination. As a result of attending this training, participants will:

  • Understand addiction as a brain disease
  • Understand stigma and discrimination
  • Understand the impact of stigma and discrimination
  • Learn why person-first language works
  • Develop takeaway and action steps
