SOR Scholarship Application
PRESENTATION: This training will provide participants with an understanding of the science behind Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Understanding the mechanics of the brain and how SUD happens can provide us with a better avenue for dealing with people who have this disease. This training will also provide participants with information about particular classes of drugs and how they each affect the brain. In addition, the training will examine family dynamics and how family members are affected. Community resources and opportunities for treatment will be explored.
Substance Use Disorder has an immense impact on the Foster Care system. There is a high percentage of children that are removed from homes due to SUD in the home, which often results in neglect. Understanding SUD may help us to deal with the children in these situations more effectively and may also lead us to helping the entire family in ways that leads to recovery and reunification.
- Participants will understand the science of addiction and how the brain function is different in someone afflicted with the disease of addiction.
- Participants will understand the classes of drugs and how they affect people.
- Participants will better understand the resources that are available in our state.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Corey Gately, MLADC, is the Director of Substance Use Services at LRGHealthcare, as well as the Director of the Doorway at LRGHealthcare, through which she has provided clinical coordination of the LRGHealthcare Recovery Clinic, a medication assisted treatment program providing services to people recovering from opiate addiction. She has been integral in the development of programs throughout the hospital to help people receive increased services for Substance Use Disorder including training staff about MAT induction in the ED, stigma reduction and the utilization of Recovery Coaches throughout the hospital. She provides oversight and brief intervention counseling with patients as well as coordination of care with community agencies and individual clinicians. A Master Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor, with over 20 years professional experience, Corey started as a substance use counselor in the Nathan Brody Intensive Outpatient Chemical Dependency Program providing emergency room social work and crisis intervention services, as well as long term individual counseling for people with substance use and co-occurring disorders.
Corey is a teaching lecturer at Plymouth State University providing advanced, graduate level courses in Substance Use Disorder treatment. Her areas of concentration include family dynamics in the addicted family, medication assisted treatment and advancements in the treatment of people with opiate addictions. She received an Associate’s degree in Chemical Dependency and Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from Keene State College. She earned a Human Services/Community Psychology Master’s degree from Springfield College. Corey and her husband, John, have 3 children, ages 20, 17, and 13. She enjoys Crossfit and is a Level 1 Crossfit Coach.
