PRESENTATION:  When David Hawkins and Richard Catalano first proposed their Risk and Protective Factor Theory for substance misuse/abuse in the 1980’s, it was thought that there were a separate and distinct set of risk and protective factors for each behavioral health disorders.  What we have learned since then is that that while there are some unique risk factors for various disorders, there are also risk and protective factors that are shared. Knowledge of these can not only enhance the effectiveness and scope of our work in prevention and treatment, they can provide a basis for community collaboration. This webinar will explore the concept of shared factors, list reasons for and examples of their usefulness in strategic planning, and suggest opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.  At the close of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • define and provide examples of shared risk and protective factors;
  • list 3 reasons for addressing shared risk and protective factors; and
  • list at least 3 strategies for overcoming common barriers to collaboration around shared factors.

PRESENTER:  Sandra Puerini Del Sesto, M.Ed, ACPS, is a consultant and master trainer who has provided community and strategic planning, program development, and capacity building in all areas of prevention practice throughout the United States. For 20 years she worked in this capacity for the US Center for the Application of Prevention Technology (CAPT). She was the founder and for 30 years the executive director of Initiatives for Human Development, a statewide, multi-service prevention program, and a founder of CODAC, RI’s largest non-profit treatment program. She has worked extensively at both the community and state levels directing a statewide prevention agency, developing strategic prevention/behavioral health care plans, creating curriculum and programs for at-risk youth and families as well as instructional guidelines for substance misuse and mental health education. In addition to her prevention work, she was the founding director of the Institute for Addiction Recovery at RI College and is board chair of RI’s largest statewide multi-service treatment program. She is a member of the faculty and advisory board of the New England School of Addiction Studies, a member of the advisory board for the National Hispanic and Latino Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) and the New England PTTC, and a member of the Board of Directors and the Prevention Committee Co-Chair of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), the international organization that certifies professionals working in behavioral health. Sandra is a co-author of the CAPT’s Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training (SAPST) and its basic and advanced Prevention Ethics as well as many other courses and webinars. Sandra received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Boston College (Newton), and her Master’s degree in counselor education from Rhode Island College. She also completed a certificate program in non-profit management through Brown University in Providence. Ms. Del Sesto is an advanced certified prevention specialist.
