A 4 hour training event with Lynn Lyons, LICSW

8:30 am to 1:00 pm, April 9, 2021

PRESENTATION:  Both anxiety and depression continue to rise among teens; anxiety is currently the top reason why a parent brings a child to a mental health professional.  Because an untreated anxiety disorder is a top predictor of developing depression as an adolescent or young adult, the need for prevention and more effective treatment of anxiety has become a critical focus for those who work with teens and young adults in many settings.  Most teens and parents dealing with anxiety and depression in their families do not have a clear understanding of how anxiety and depression get better or worse, and have no concrete plan to respond when anxiety shows up.

This training will teach attendees how to weaken anxiety’s grip, move teens into an active approach to their anxiety and depression, and is likely different from what they have been taught previously.  We will focus on how to interrupt anxiety and depression’s consistent patterns, thereby heading off depression with simple, process-based strategies.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Design active assignments for teens and their parents that correct the common cognitive traps that bolster both anxiety and depression.
  2. Explain the common cognitive and behavioral overlaps between anxiety and depression.
  3. Identify avoidant and safety behaviors that strengthen anxiety and depression.

PRESENTER:   Lynn Lyons, LICSW is an internationally recognized psychotherapist, author, and speaker with a special interest in interrupting the generational patterns of anxiety in families. Her skill-based approach to anxiety focuses on the need to teach families about how anxiety works and what families can do to pull members out of the powerful “anxiety cult” that demands obedience to its need for certainty and comfort.  Lyons is the co-author with Reid Wilson of Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents and the companion book for kids Playing with Anxiety: Casey’s Guide for Teens and Kids. She is the author of Using Hypnosis with Children: Creating and Delivering Effective Interventions and has multiple online programs for parents, teens and children.
