An 18 hour training event with Seven Challenges, LLC

April 28-30, 2021

9:00am–4:00pm (daily)

PRESENTATION: Created for adolescent treatment providers such as youth care workers, assistant group facilitators, or caseworkers who will be working with youth, this training prepares counselors to immediately begin providing The Seven Challenges Program.  As a result of attending this 18-hour training event, participants will:

• Be able to critique traditional approaches to drug treatment.
• Know the three tasks of adolescent development and how to promote healthy development in drug treatment.
• Know the six stages of change in overcoming behavioral problems, and the types of interventions most appropriate in patient-treatment matching.
• Understand how to set appropriate goals in adolescent drug treatment, based on knowledge of adolescent development and the stages of change.
• Know five new ways to work with adolescents to reduce defensiveness and denial.
• Understand the idea of a counselor as a “problem-solving partner.”
• Learn at least five new techniques and strategies for helping young people move through the stages of change.
• Know the Seven Challenges process, including the significance of each challenge and how to use the Challenges as part of a decision-making and implementation model.
• Be familiar with Seven Challenges material; learn how to introduce and use the materials.
• Have a basic understanding of the clinical skills that go with each challenge.
• Understand the game of “Go ahead, try to make me quit” and how NOT to play it.
• Have a basic understanding of how to implement The Seven Challenges Program in their own unique counseling setting / level of care.
• Make the connections between drug use behavior, life skill deficits, and underlying psychological, family, and social problems.
• Have introduction to what is entailed in Seven Challenges supervision, including the introduction of the Counselor Rating and Review form.  The prospective Seven Challenges Leader(s) will have introduction to Seven Challenges quality assurance documents with instructions for starting.  (More Supervisory and QA training is given at The Seven Challenges Leader Training.)

The Seven Challenges:

1. We decided to open up and talk honestly about ourselves and about alcohol and other drugs.
2. We looked at what we liked about alcohol and other drugs, and why we were using them.
3. We looked at our use of alcohol and other drugs to see if it has caused harm or could cause harm.
4. We looked at our responsibility and the responsibility of others for our problems.
5. We thought about where we seemed to be headed, where we wanted to go, and what we wanted to accomplish.
6. We made thoughtful decisions about our lives and about our use of alcohol and other drugs.
7. We followed through on our decisions about our lives and drug use. If we saw problems, we went back to earlier challenges and mastered them.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Richard L. Barr, LMHC, is the Senior Program Specialist.  He works closely with organizations to provide training, clinical support, and oversight of Seven Challenges implementations.  Richard has worked extensively in the fields of education and counseling and prior to joining The Seven Challenges he was the clinical director for several juvenile justice programs.  Richard is also in private practice and serves as a part-time psychology instructor at Trinity International University.
