PRESENTATION: Dialectical Behavior Therapy was developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD. to help individuals who struggle with emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal chaos and dysregulation.  DBT is a cognitive behavioral approach that helps individuals create a more stable life.  This training will provide an overview of the theoretical underpinnings, structure of a DBT program, treatment targets in addition to review of skills taught in the DBT framework. Following this presentation, participants will be able to: 

  • Understand the theory which lead to the unique approach of DBT;
  • Learn the targets established in treatment in addition to strategies for managing behaviors which “get in the way” of effective therapy; and
  • Learn how to teach and incorporate the key skills of DBT (Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation).


                8:30am-9:45am: Overview of DBT treatment & Biosocial Theory

                9:45am-10am: Break

                10am-11am: Treatment Modalities and Targets

                11am-12pm: Lunch (on your own)

                12pm-2:30pm: Core Mindfulness Skills, Emotion Regulation Skills

                2:30pm-2:45pm: Break

                2:45-4pm: Emotion Regulation Skills

                4pm: End

PRESENTER: Dr. Laurie Brodeur, a licensed clinical psychologist, was trained by Dr. Linehan when DBT was first developed almost 30 years ago.  Dr. Brodeur has provided mental health care for decades in community mental health and private practice settings.  Since learning DBT, she has consistently used this approach to help clients who present with highly dysregulated behaviors and mood to learn how use DBT skills to create more stable lives and relationships.   Dr. Brodeur has provided numerous DBT trainings and consulted with many teams on program development and implementation.

CPS Domains: 2, 6

NBCC: LICSW/L-MFT/LCMHC (Category 1) & Psychologist Category ANH Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider. ACEP No 6754. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NHADACA is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
