This training is remote only.


This training is free to Drug Court Staff  & Providers ONLY, please use the code you were provided. For all non-drug court staff, please pay the registration fee.


PRESENTATION: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, evidence-based, goal-oriented method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence with the individual. This active, skill-building workshop provides participants with knowledge of the spirit, micro skills, and strategies of the model, and provides opportunities to practice the approach. Participants will complete the workshop with a good understanding of MI, and are encouraged to take the Intermediate and Advanced MI workshops to develop proficiency in this method. Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe several core concepts of Motivational Interviewing;
  • Demonstrate the various micro skills of Motivational Interviewing; and
  • List five strategies for using Motivational Interviewing to elicit change talk.

OVERALL GOAL: Participants will be introduced to the spirit, skills, and strategies of Motivational Interviewing.


APPROXIMATE SCHEDULE:

Day One:

9:00am-10:30am: Lecture & Discussion: Core concepts and the spirit of MI

10:30am-10:45am: Break

10:45am-12:15pm: Lecture & Discussion: Spirit of MI

12:15pm: End of Day One


Day Two:

9:00am-10:30am: Lecture, Discussion, and Demonstration: Skills of MI

10:30am-10:45am: Break

10:45am-12:15pm: Coached Practice: Sprit and Skills of MI

                              Lecture: Strategies of MI

12:15pm: End

FURTHER TRAINING:

  • Intermediate Motivational Interviewing is scheduled for: 4/14 & 4/15/22, 9am-12:15pm (daily)
  • Advanced Motivational Interviewing is scheduled for: 4/28 & 4/29/22, 9am-12:15pm (daily)

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Bob has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers since 2010. He teaches Motivational Interviewing (MI) as an adjunct faculty member at Salve Regina University, Rhode Island College, and previously at the University of Massachusetts Boston; he is also a consultant with the New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center at Brown University and works as an MI coder for a nationally-recognized coding lab. Bob is the lead trainer for Jope Consulting Services, has taught MI at agencies all over New England, and consults internationally on teaching and coding the method. Holding a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, Bob has worked in the mental health, child welfare, and substance abuse fields for the past twenty-five years. He was originally trained in MI by Stephen Andrew in 2007, and has since trained with Ali Hall and Alan Lyme. Bob has also developed and taught program-specific MI training applications, and has trained thousands of people in various levels of Motivational Interviewing.
