This training will be remote only.

PRESENTATION: This presentation will provide participants with the ability to examine their use of reflective practice skills in order to maximize desired outcomes in their work with clients.  An in-depth review of professional boundaries as they relate to the NASW: National Association of Social Workers and the NAADAC: The Association for Addiction Professionals/NCCAP: The National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals codes of ethics; federal and state laws as well as clinical best practices.  The unique impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on boundaries in professional practice will be examined.  Types of professional boundaries and the challenges that professionals encounter regarding boundaries will be examined.  In addition, best practices to assure healthy boundaries and to prevent boundary crossings and boundary violations will be presented. At the end of this training participants will:

  1. Gain a clear knowledge and skills to engage in ongoing reflective clinical practice in their work with clients as related to healthy boundary maintenance;
  2. Gain an understanding of how their professional Codes of Ethics can guide their clinical decision making in ways that best maintain appropriate professional boundaries and resolve ethical dilemmas relating to boundaries in practice;
  3. Gain knowledge of types of boundaries, challenges which exist in their professional work lives;
  4. Gain increased awareness of the unique impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on boundaries in clinical practice as well as learn innovative ideas to meet the practice challenges presented by the epidemic;
  5. Learn the variety of challenges to boundaries that may exist in different practice settings; and
  6. Be provided with a range of clinical strategies to promote healthy and appropriate boundaries in practice.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:  Scott Meyer, MSW, Ph.D. is a Professor of Social Work and the Director of Field Education at Herzing University..  He is also professor emeritus of social work at Plymouth State University.  Dr. Meyer’s MSW is in clinical social work from Adelphi University, NY.  His doctorate is in sociology from BU specializing in organizational behavior, medical sociology and mental health.  He served as an executive administrator for social rehabilitation and was on faculty at the BU School of Medicine as a clinical instructor of psychiatry. He taught at Curry College, MA and at Roger Williams College, RI.  He provided counseling services as a LICSW in NH and is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work through the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work. Dr. Meyer works with public and private agencies providing organizational and clinical consultation, training, program evaluation and grant writing services.
