PRESENTATION: Mental health providers are on the front lines of suicide prevention efforts. A unique community-based, public health approach, Connect training increases the competence of mental health providers in recognizing, assessing and planning with individuals who are suicidal or at risk for suicide. This training includes evidence based practice strategies, interactive case scenarios, discussion, exercises, PowerPoint, and accessory materials. Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:


  1. Describe the National Best Practices for mental health providers in responding to suicidal behaviors based on Zero Suicide and National Strategy for Suicide Prevention guidelines;
  2.  List individual, family and community risk and protective factors and ways to strengthen the positive influences that prevent suicide in a community through a collaborative approach;
  3.  Recall suicide data and how age, gender, culture and other factors impact suicide risk;
  4.  Name positive action steps to increase help seeking;
  5. Recognize risk factors and warning signs for suicide risk assessment;
  6. Understand how to engage members of a support system as part of crisis and safety planning; and
  7. Describe practices concerning reducing access to lethal means and safety planning.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Elaine de Mello is a licensed clinical social worker who has worked in the mental health field since 1978 as a clinical program manager in inpatient and community settings; she also served as an emergency services clinician and director of Quality Improvement. Additionally, Elaine worked for seven years as a school counselor and currently teaches on the faculty at Plymouth State University and as a Child Impact Program teacher at Riverbend Community Mental Health Center. Elaine has worked full time with NAMI NH since 1999 where she had a lead role in the development of the Connect Suicide Prevention and Postvention Program, a national best practice. Elaine has provided training and consultation in mental health and suicide prevention throughout the United States and Canada in a variety of settings including state and tribal entities, community coalitions, schools and campuses, health care facilities, and military and paramilitary organizations.  She serves as a trainer for the NH Police Standards and Training Council, and is also a master trainer in AMSR, CALM and Connect and is certified in conducting psychological autopsies through the American Association of Suicidology.  Elaine serves on the NH Suicide Fatality Review Committee and has been the co-chair of the NH Youth Suicide Prevention Assembly since 2003. She has served on the national faculty for Zero Suicide. Elaine is a 2012 recipient of the NH State Suicide Prevention Award.

NH Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider. ACEP No 6754. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NHADACA is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
