PRESENTATION:   While New Hampshire has some of the highest rates of substance misuse by youth and young adults in the Northeast, we are by no means unique in dealing with substance misuse and addiction issues.  These behavioral issues are some of the most pressing issues facing every state in our Nation, so it is no surprise that healthcare providers are being asked to play a significant role in the public health response. Harmful drinking and risky drug use are common and costly. The Governor’s Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, Intervention and Treatment implemented a statewide multi-stakeholder strategy.  The strategic plan incorporates a multi-sector approach, calling on the “health and medical sector to support a culture change relative to how alcohol and drug use is viewed and effectively addressed.” Recommended activities toward this goal include the implementation of SBIRT, thus incorporating prevention into the health care setting. Research evidence supports the SBIRT Model as a cost effective public health approach. Implementation of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is underway across private practices, community health centers, and hospital-based primary care and social service settings in NH.  This introductory training aims to increase providers’ competence and confidence across the practice to routinely screen patients on their substance use and provide an appropriate Brief Intervention using motivational interviewing techniques.  As a result of attending this training participants will be able to:  Describe the four components of SBIRT and who benefits; Review brief intervention techniques that utilize motivational interviewing skills. Instructors will provide a menu of motivational interviewing tools; and Share list resources in New Hampshire for providers and patients to seek help with assessment and referral to treatment.

PRESENTER:  Martha Bradley, MS works across several functions and initiatives at CHI/JSI including program health promotion, communication strategies, community mobilization, training, curriculum and program development and implementation. She has worked with dozens of health and service providers in NH to assist them in adopting SBIRT into their workflow and develop tools to sustain their practice change.   Ms. Bradley has a wide breadth of experience creating and managing targeted interventions for various audiences and topics including substance use, tobacco treatment, healthy eating, increased physical activity, immunizations, and diabetes for healthcare professionals, oral health professionals, mental health counselors, credit counselors, adult basic education instructors and WIC nutritionists.    Whether she is creating a single collateral piece of material, decision aid, video, or a comprehensive campaign, she actively seeks the involvement and input of the intended audience and deliberately builds health education and adult learning theories into her overall design and approach.
