The Seven Challenges®

Learning Objectives for Leader Training

October 9-11, 2019 from 9:00 – 4:30 pm. Registration begins at 8:30 am.

Number of Contact Hours:  18

Program Implementation

  • Understand all aspect of The Seven Challenges Implementation document and be prepared to implement (including peer support groups; supervision; QA; follow up calls)
  • Customize Seven Challenges implementation to own setting – based on description of setting and discussion of any implementation issues and problems
  • Learn to train new counselors as they are hired to implement The Seven Challenges Program.
  • Learn to train non professional staff in The Seven Challenges
  • Learn and plan to orient schools, courts, child welfare agencies, payers and other stakeholders

Clinical Training

  • Review underpinnings, program history, and basic skills of The Seven Challenges
  • Review the introduction and use of Seven Challenges materials
  • Understand all aspects of The Seven Challenges Counselor Skill Evaluation form
  • Gain greater mastery of basic counseling skills by participating in problem solving around clinical issues
  • Advanced clinical skills learned by role-play of certain critical situations, including the skills listed on The Seven Challenges evaluation form.
  • Develop Cooperative Journaling Skills by reviewing one’s own youth Journals and the Journals of others
  • Practice implementing the introductory Seven Challenges sessions
  • Develop advanced expertise in a variety of topics such as:
    • allowing youth to gain understanding of their reasons for drugs use and what they like about drugs, without enabling drug use
    • engaging youth in work and ensuring that sessions are working sessions
    • how to discuss drug dangers and harm without engaging in power struggles
    • how to avoid playing the game of “Go ahead, try to make me quit.”                         

o   how to orient and work with parents of youth in The Seven Challenges model.

  • Validation, without justification for behavior
  • The difference between an impulse to quit and an informed and motivated decision to quit, and how to respond differentially
  • How to implement courtesy relapse prevention
  • Boundaries and self disclosure
  • Medication and drug abusing or drug dependent clients

Supervision

  • Learn how to incorporate Seven Challenges training into supervision sessions
  • Learn how to respond to most common problems in supervision of The Seven Challenges

Facilitator:

Richard L. Barr, LMHC, is the Senior Program Specialist for The Seven Challenges®, LLC.  He works closely with organizations to provide training, clinical support, and oversight of Seven Challenges implementations.  Richard has worked extensively in the fields of education and counseling and prior to joining The Seven Challenges he was the clinical director for several juvenile justice programs.  Richard is also in private practice and serves as a part-time psychology instructor at Trinity International University.

NBCC: LICSW/L-MFT/LCMHC (Category A) & Psychologist (Category A)  NH Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider. ACEP No 6754. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NHADACA is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. 

PLEASE NOTE: Only one registrant per form.  For multiple registrants you must register each one individually.  Registration is not complete or guaranteed until payment is received.  Payment by means other than credit card may slow down completion of registration.  Checks and cash are still accepted, however, your registration will be placed on a pending list until payment is received.  We strongly encourage payment by credit card for training of high demand topics.  Thank you.
