Working with Individuals Who Use Stimulants: Current Issues & Best Practices with Samuel MacMaster, PhD
PRESENTATION: Effective services for people who use substances are individually tailored to a client or patient’s specific needs, which are often dictated by the type of substance being used. For over a decade, discussions of substance use treatment have focused primarily on opiate use due to the devastation the epidemic has created across the country. Yet, the use of stimulants (cocaine, methamphetamine, and other stimulants) has been steadily increasing. This presentation will provide an overview of stimulant use and what we know to be best practice approaches in working with individuals who use cocaine, methamphetamines, and other stimulants with or without opiate use. Approaches for both out of treatment and in treatment services will be presented.
Presentation Objectives: Upon completion of this session participants will:
- recognize the current state of stimulant use and where we are in current drug use trends;
- be able to describe best practice approaches for individuals who use stimulants;
- be able to classify the differences and similarities in approaches to individuals who use other types of substances; and
- be able to discuss the application of best practices in their individual practice settings.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Samuel MacMaster, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor within the Department of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College and serves as the Executive Director of the Elam Mental Health Center, the primary indigent care behavioral health provider for the city of Nashville.
