PRESENTATION: The 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that the percentage of people in the United States who had both a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) diagnosis and Mental Health Diagnosis (co-occurring) increased from 3.3 percent (or 8.1 million people) in 2015 to 3.8 percent (or 9.5 million people) (NSDUH, 2019). In SUD treatment, treatment outcomes are often predicated on individualized assessment experiences. The assessment experience can contribute to or alleviate access to care disparities in minority communities. Through a culturally responsive lens, a thorough assessment of the patient’s identifying problems can lead to a more accurate diagnosis and prognosis for treatment, which allows the helping professional to tailor fit the treatment experience to the patient’s primary needs. In this presentation, participants will explore how to aggregate data collected throughout assessment to provide individualized treatment and improve treatment outcomes.
As a result of the training, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the importance of the assessment process in person-centered care;
- Evaluate assessment findings to explore and organize strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences (SNAP), including cultural considerations for treatment; and
- Maintain an open-assessment-posture by using client directed, outcome-informed treatment.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Samson Teklemariam, LPC, CPTM, is the Vice President of Clinical Services for Behavioral Health Group (BHG). He is an accomplished leader with a history of driving organizational results with learning and development solutions. Known for implementing initiatives that support organizational priorities and produce measurable outcomes, he has been a leader in the field of addiction treatment for over 12 years. He was formerly the Director of Training and Professional Development for NAADAC. He is a Certified Lead Trainer for the Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Substance Abuse (CBISA) curriculum, Calm Every Storm: Crisis Prevention & Intervention curriculum, and experienced in treating trauma-related disorders using trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TFCBT) and Seeking Safety. Samson previously worked for Phoenix House Foundation as the National Director of Learning and Development.
