A 2-Hour Training with David Fawcett, PhD, LCSW, CSAT

PRESENTATION: This session reviews the impact of addictive behaviors on the brain, including the sexual effects of various drugs, how drugs and sex overtake the brain’s reward circuitry, the critical role of dopamine, the development of tolerance, and neurological factors in long term recovery. Implications for clinical practice are included.

Following this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the impact of addictive behaviors on the reward center of the brain, including the role of dopamine in tolerance and escalation;
  2. Describe “superstimulants” and the process by which they pose a particularly high risk for development of addiction; and
  3. Describe at least 3 of the best practices for recovery from sexualized drug use, including dual strategies of abstinence from substances and health reincorporation of sexual behaviors.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: David Fawcett PhD, LCSW, CSAT is a clinical sexologist who has worked in addictions and mental health for three decades. He wrote Lust, Men, and Meth: A Gay Man’s Guide to Sex and Recovery and Sex Under the Influence: Understanding and Healing from Sexualized Drug Use (in publication). He was VP for Clinical Programming at Seeking Integrity providing treatment programs for sex and porn addiction and chemsex. David produces “Sex, Love, and Addiction: Healing Conversations for Men Who Have Sex with Men” and he produced the award-winning documentary Crystal City. He is on IITAP’s faculty for the Rainbow Advocacy and Educator Program.
