PRESENTATION: This workshop is a collaborative training between Connor’s Climb, a suicide prevention organization, and Seacoast Outright, an organization that supports LGBTQ+ youth. LGBTQ+ youth are at an increased risk of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, which makes effective support and intervention for this population critical. This training will create a shared understanding of basic LGBTQ+ terminology and will cover the unique risk factors that elevate the risk of suicide for these youth, as well as methods of increasing protective factors as a means of suicide prevention.

Following this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Define basic LGBTQ+ terms:  gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation;
  2. Explain why LGBTQ+ youth are at an elevated risk of suicide and unique risk factors;
  3. Identify warning signs for depression and/or suicidal ideation; and
  4. Describe upstream support strategies, protective factors for LGBTQ+ youth and how to ACT to prevent a suicide attempt

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

Jessica “Jess” Goff (she/her/hers) works as the Community Outreach and Education Coordinator at Seacoast Outright, a nonprofit organization that serves, supports, and advocates for LGBTQ+ youth in the Seacoast area of New Hampshire and beyond. Jessica holds her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of New Hampshire and her Bachelor's degree in Human Development from Rivier University. She is a lifelong NH resident and currently lives in Concord.

Sarah Gould has worked with and on behalf of children and families for over 15 years.  She is currently the Training and Program Manager for Connor’s Climb Foundation, a small Exeter-based non-profit that provides evidence and research-based suicide prevention education to schools and communities throughout New Hampshire and bordering communities.  Sarah coordinates and facilitates all the training for Connor’s Climb.
