Understanding Intake: The Second Step in Becoming A Competent Substance Abuse Counselor
with Kelly Reardon MEd, MLADC

PRESENTATION: The 12 Core Functions of addiction counseling have been set in place as a standard for counselors to use in their practice, and as a way for them to be held responsible and accountable for their work. The core functions are a type of road map for how counselors should conduct their work with all substance abuse clients. They are also part of a counselor’s initial licensure process where they must know all 12 core functions and have 300 supervised hours conducting the core functions. This webinar is designed to provide individuals with the basic tools and understanding of the second step in becoming a competent substance abuse counselor. Participants will learn the proper components and methods of filling out releases of information with clients and how to address possible treatment barriers during intake. Participants will also learn about the beginning components of the clinical interviewing process, gathering data, and building rapport and empathy.
